Nature’s Healing Remedies

Throughout my life I was treated liberally with antibiotics by doctors who never tried to understand the root cause of my chronic sinus infections, bronchial ailments, or digestive distress. Growing up, I wish I had known that the medication I frequently took would ultimately wreck havoc on my gut and perpetuate a cycle of increased infection and internal inflammation.

Nature provides us with countless remedies that have been successfully harnessed for hundreds of years to fight infection without the risks of microbial imbalance associated with antibiotic use. Of course, choosing a natural treatment path requires rigorous commitment and a considerable amount of patience. Two of the biggest mistakes I’ve made when taking herbal supplements are stopping treatment too soon and limiting my intake given my fear of taking too much (be sure to consult with your herbalist for more guidance on this front). My personal experimentation has taught me that supplements should still be taken several days after your last symptoms and used according to your need rather than in strict alignment with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Finally, when choosing supplements:

  1. Choose brands like Gaia Herbs considering purity and potency.
  2. If choosing other brands, read labels and look for gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, yeast-free notations. Avoid excessive fillers like cornstarch and added sugars.
  3. Consult an herbalist for traditional Chinese Medicine formulas.
  4. Continue to follow a plant-based diet and rigorous probiotic regime.
